Basic Information about Merit Badge Adventure

Merit Badge Adventure process:
Merit Badge Adventure Committee believes our merit badge day event is an EDGE method practice for scouts along with opportunities for developing their skills in leadership, organizational, and communication.  It's a growth time for the scouts' confidence, self-initiative, self-reliance and more.  Starting with their Troop's annual program planning of putting our event on their Troop's calendar to the time the scouts check in, is designed to follow the Baden Powell's methods of BOY-led.  In keeping with the Boy Scout's Patrol Method of BOY-led, Merit Badge Adventure designed its SPL's Merit Badge Adventure e-blast Packet with the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) in mind.  Merit Badge Adventure forms are designed to enable scouts to do for themselves.  Forms are electronically designed so information can be shared via Troop websites, Facebook, e-lists, mobile phones and more. (Mouse-click inserts are included for websites and downloads.)

Please do not short change your scouts by allowing adults to do the entire Merit Badge Adventure process for Troop's scouts.Remember, never do anything a scout can do!

Registration process:
SPL utilizes different forms in the SPL's Merit Badge Adventure e-blast Packet  from announcing the event, getting sign ups, conveying prerequisites information, collecting monies before payment deadlines, coordinating carpools and more.  Some Troops have the tech-savvy scouts and resources: laptop and internet connection to be able to do registration at their Troop meetings in the presence of their adult leadership.  Other Troops do not, hence the SPL should look through e-blast packet and think about the steps of how and whom he should ask to take care of the actual online registration and payment tasks so they are done in an efficient manner.

Parents and Leaders Hanging out at MB Adventure?
Plenty of ways to help...
  • Merit Badge Counselor -  Suggest they help a MB Adventure Counselor and observe how things are done.  There are many merit badges that can use an adult helper during our event.
  • Tasks - There are tasks like scout check in, lunch serving, set up, tear down and more that need hands.  The advantage is they are time sequenced and still allow parents and leaders to attend Adult Leadership Training and Mini-Sessions.  No prior skills necessary.
  • Presenters - Got a topic to share or need to finish a Wood Badge ticket, think about presenting an hour Mini-Session topic.
  • Our Midway is always looking for fresh materials to share.

Encourage your parents and leaders to email Seneca.MBA@gmail.com please.
Newbie Scoutmasters -- those vital websites and merit badge helps

Blue cards - Important to be sure to sign the front of the blue cards where it asks for leader's signature BEFORE your scouts come to MB Adventure.

MeritBadge.ORG -- Valuable workbooks are found here. (Sometimes they are called by the old name -- worksheets.)
FYI.. In 2013, they merged with US Scouts.org.  Changes are still taking place on the 'workbooks instead of worksheets' name change.  It gets confusing because there is merit badge pamphlets that are sometimes called merit badge books.  The pamphlets are sold online through ScoutStuff.org or at your local Council Scout Shop.

MeritBadge.INFO -- The online registration system for ANY merit badge event that chooses to use their system for registrations.  Can be ANY state or country.  Nice to know if you have a Scout trying to earn ALL 136 merit badges.

Bryan on Scouting of Scouting Magazine -- Bryan Wendell is a blogger that keeps the Scouting world updated first on ANY merit badge changes plus loads of other Troop stuff.  You can even join his e-list and get the info directly to your email and read at your leisure or interest.

Mr. D Merit Badge Review -- KNOTS or Not scout cartoonist Rich Diesslin writes up a nice review of ALL the merit badges that is really helpful when trying to determine if a merit badge is appropriate for a Scout in your Troop.

ScoutmasterCG -- Clarke Green made a beautiful infographic of the blue card steps.  His blog has much information since its all Troop focused.  Can give one a greater understanding of what Baden Powell's Patrol Method really is.
